1 Components of consent There are three components of consent which usually occur simultaneously before randomisation in an individually randomised trial. These are consent to (i) randomisation, (ii) participation in the intervention, and (iii) data collection; participants must agree to all three components. In cluster randomised trials individuals cannot usually consent to randomisation, as this takes place at the cluster level. Individuals may or may not have the opportunity to opt out of the intervention and may or may not be required to give consent for data collection, depending on the mode of collection of the outcome data.
