Across the Potomac River, the Confederate force believed a single victory would prove decisive. Congress demanded action. Although the Union Army was ill-trained and poorly organized, Lincoln yielded to congressional pressure and ordered General Irvin McDowell to advance into Virginia. The First Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861, was a rout of the Union forces. Lincoln called up 250,000 fresh troops and began his long search for a capable general to command the Army of the Potomac. While the realization sank in that they faced a long war, Lincoln and his family settled into a life in the White House.
