Lincoln, in turn, continued to avoid what might be considered a too-radical public stance. At Charleston, Illinois, on September 18, he rejected the notion of blacks being equal to whites. Nevertheless, Douglas appealed to moderate Illinoisans, who considered Lincoln and his supporters excessively antislavery.
