Second, the question of the phallus-bearing actors. According to Aristotle, comedy derives from those who led the phallic songs, and the etymology of ‘comedy’ derives from ‘komos’, the phallus-bearing procession (Giangrande, 1963); that is to say, the comic actor derives from the leader of the songs, who slowly acquires a separate role. e. satyrs, with horses’ tails and ears. The argument advanced by Giangrande proposes a solution which also suggests that as theatrical impersonation developed out of religious ritual, the activities in question changed their meaning by being modified.

These relationships certainly exist on a wide scale in tribal society, even if it is uncertain exactly what their meaning is, or exactly how they are imbricated with other elements in the social structure. It appears that there are analogous relationships, or situations, in industrial society, although it is far from clear how widespread they are and to what extent they are non-optional. g. ritual exchange of gifts, responsibility for marriage arrangements (Labouret, 1929; Barley, 1983:83). It follows from this that some sort of cue mechanism is essential.

To these formal studies we can add the informal observation that two types of relationship in our society seem particularly apt for joking: grandparent/ grandchild and friendship in general. Of course, neither relationship pre-scribes joking, but in both cases joking seems to arise very naturally and spontaneously. In the case of friendship we may guess that this is because friendship is the only relationship in our society which is entirely optional and reciprocal, and is thus free of the constraints imposed by any formal framework such as family, workplace, etc.
