Even if you know all of the standard practices that exist for maps, you will still have to deal with your unique data and mapping goals. And the only way to deal with those is to employ your creative skills. A lack of those skills could be extremely detrimental to your achievement of cartographic excellence. This brings us to a concept of duality in map design: you need knowledge of mapping standards and creative intelligence. Without the standards know-how, you risk everything from leaving out a bit of information that could have been useful, all the way to making grievous communications errors.
Use a variation of a map that has already been made. To begin, start looking up other maps that you like. Keep a book of maps by your desk for such purposes, go online, or sift through other maps that your department has done in the past. There are two ways to produce derivatives of these other works. The first is to find a layout that you really like and try to follow its general design on your own map including placement of the title, map element, and so forth. The second is to compile a list of things that you like from each map that you want to apply to your own map such as color schemes, emphasis map placement, title fonts, and so forth.
For one, he wanted a slightly unique way to separate the many pieces of a margin grouping box. His solution was to provide titles for each section of the margin, but to both deemphasize the titles and use them as graphic elements by running them vertically along the separations between the margin sections. So, for example, between the legend and data sources sections he simply wrote “Data Sources” vertically in the space between them. Another example is his use of what I call the “split screen” approach, where he was faced with large amounts of data on either side of a national park that he wanted to display on his map.
